Production | Sprint 5

The fifth sprint draws to a close and our production is becoming a sprint to the finish. At this stage we are at the phase where we are making cuts and figuring out what are absolute necessities for the game that need to ship with the most complete version of the game.

This sprint I was given a wider range of tasks to work on: from modeling to sound to 2D art. My initial focus was the Banner for the Itch.io page; however I had to pivot mid sprint to modeling for other cards.

A locked crate was required of me this sprint and so it was done. As previous I do my best to keep everything low poly, good topology, and in quads. Achieving the curve that I do in areas like the locked crate's handles I drew out a curve and extruded edges along side the curve. The lock I followed a similar approach.

Keeping in line with what we are using it for I made sure to put pivot points in all the right places so it could be properly animated. For those concerned I didn't leave the lock as blocky as it looks above, I did come in with a bevel along each edge.

Unlike previous UV sheets I was free to use as much space as I wanted as this was the only piece that would be in the zero to one space. Two things that I noted after snapping this picture was that The right most rectangle at the top of the three had some off stretching around where I cut the latch from the box. And that the body of the box bled ever so slightly out of the zero to one space. I sought to use the free space as freely as possible so as much of the texture read as clearly as possible.

The texturing took some extra time. I opted to make the locks red so it stood out and drew player attention. The trouble I had a large chunk of the time texturing was achieving a look like there was a lot of dirt, rust, and paint that had some loss of saturation in some areas due to age. I dropped some barely visible flavor text and viola. I felt like the locked crate necessitated a bit more care than other props as it would be interacted with and used far more. Nonetheless the care was taken and the job was done.

Now lastly the piece de resistance. The banner. I checked in with my leads constantly to ensure this was done within the sprint. I drew out sketch after sketch with layers upon layers of doodles and instruction on how to proceed.

I wanted to utilize more traditional forms of getting this done but due to the time constraints I got more creative. I used the webcam on my computer to take pictures of myself that I heavily photoshopped and drew over to achieve the look here. The soldier, the zombie, and the corpse are all me. Various filters and such. I used a light from above the title to draw attention to it and have the eye jump to each other element in the scene.

This took hours to achieve and I was extremely satisfied with the final result. After final looks from my leads and very satisfied responses I made sure to emphatically move this card to verify.
