Week Two -- Back to the Drawing Board

 The New Concept

Last week I was advised to stray away from a recognizable franchise for the sake of a unique portfolio piece. I took the advice to heart as I truly to display original work.
Per a suggestion in another course I took to MidJourney, an AI that generates art via prompts, to come up with some rough concept art. I input "Big O Orca Gundam Killer Whale Mecha Robot" and the image above is a contact sheet of the results. Each one provides different avenues to approach making an orca mech.
I then went and found an orca reference that gave relative scale and a profile view. From here I began taking the organic shape of a whale in tandem with the metal plating and forms from MidJourney.
In Maya I took to the content browser to drop a whale and dolphin into the scene for scale. Using the distance tool I made a bounding box of sorts for the scale of the mecha orca, dubbed "Morca," because its a mecha orca and it's more than an orca.
Using my newly I acquired skills in subdivision modeling I took a cube and with world symmetry on I dragged the vertexes around until I came to a satisfying shape. I created a second cube doing the same. After deleting faces and lining up vertexes I combined the meshes. With a new concept comes a new timeline.
